  2. Mechanics in General You’ll need to adjust to: • Rule Variations (18 of them) • The Smaller Field • Fewer Players • Wide-Open style of play • Fast-Paced, High-Scoring Game

  3. Pre-Game Lots of the same preparation as in the 11-Player game: • Arrive at least 90 minutes prior to kickoff • Do a thorough Pre-Game Meeting • Meet with the Coaches • Walk the field • Prepare as professionals

  4. Scrimmage Plays – Wing Officials Prior mechanics manuals said, “H and L are positioned astride neutral zone, near or outside sideline.” Changed this year to delete the words, “near or” Now reads, “H and L are positioned astride neutral zone, outside sideline.”

  5. Scrimmage Plays – Line Judge On the line of scrimmage on the Press Box side On snap move 10-12 yards downfield Read the play • Run – Take forward progress as usual • Pass – Cover action in your area • Shift attention to the receiver when the pass is released Secondary responsibility for legal exchange

  6. Scrimmage Plays - Referee Behind the offense and at a 45o angle to the QB Responsible for all action behind the neutral zone Cover the runner/QB sideline to sideline Primary responsibility for legal exchange Sole responsibility for passer beyond the neutral zone

  7. Scrimmage Plays – Back Judge Crew of Four: • 10 to 20 yards beyond the neutral zone – adjust to be behind the deep receivers as the play develops • Read the Play • Run – Cover action of the blockers in front of the runner and then the ball carrier up the middle to the goal line • Pass – Retreat to stay deeper than all players – Favor the Line Judge side slightly • Shift attention to the receiver when the ball is released

  24. Scrimmage Kick Field Goal and Try • Mechanics are unchanged from the 11-player game • On a FIELD GOAL attempt the ball remains “Live” until it is dead by rule. • On a TRY the ball is dead as soon as it is obvious that the kick was unsuccessful or Team B gains possession of the ball. • Remember that the defense cannot score on a Try
