Political Ad: “we need a government we can be proud of ” Gas Crisis: -gas shortage crisis was a result of the Iranian Revolution – interrupted the flow of oil to U.S. -Carter gave the crisis of confidence speech to tell Americans that we have more than an energy crisis – people don’t trust government -energy crisis ended the economic recovery Jimmy Carter

  2. Iran Hostages - 55 American Embassy workers taken prisoner in Iran. Muslim fundamentalists in new Iranian government were enraged at U.S. for allowing the “Shah” to have refuge in the US. The Shah had been an American puppet that was a dictator in Iran. -Carter’s secret military mission to free the hostages failed -hostages were held captive 444 days in Iran -hostages were released just days after Carter lost the election to Reagan in 1980

  3. Economy under this President - inflation in 1979 was 11.3% 1980 was 13.5% - Carter was unable to pass many solutions due to extreme conflicts with Congress. - Carter brought in more money then he spent, but U.S. was still in a deficit 1980 Unemployment 7.1% Debt or surplus debt

  6. Accomplishments at Home - Environmental Protection laws provided money to clean up toxic waste areas around country - getting his policy initiatives through Congress was higher rate than for Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, Reagan or Bush.

Accomplishments Abroad - Camp David Accords – peace terms between Israel and Egypt to recognize each other’s existence - received Nobel Peace Prize for this - 1999 – Pamana Canal Treaty – gave canal back to Panama - Signed the Strategic Arms Limitations Treaty(SALT) with Soviet Union to reduce nuclear arms in the world

  8. How he is viewed today Carter is much more highly regarded today than when he lost his bid for reelection in 1980.

  9. How did he change the country? - although his presidency received mixed reviews, his peace keeping and humanitarian efforts since he left office have made Carter one of the most successful ex-presidents in US history. - after the shock and upset from the Watergate Scandal, citizens saw Carter as a sincere, honest, and well-meaning president.
