  1. Biodiversity Virtual e-Laboratory Ecosystem Service Indicators, Biome-BGC and the SZTAKI Desktop Grid P. Ittzés1, A. Cs. Marosi2, Z. Barcza1, F. Horváth1 1. MTA Centre for Ecological Research 2. MTA Institute for Computer Science and Control Joint agINFRA and SCI-BUS workshop, Budapest 30 May 2013

  2. BioVel: • Creates data processing tools • Carbon Sequestration • Ecosystem Functioning and Valuation • Invasive Species Management • Aims to foster cooperation in the community by: • Discussing scientific use cases • Identifying and deploying important Web Services • Designing and offering workflows • Training scientists Ecological Niche Modelling Biogeochemical modelling Metagenomics Phylogenetics Population Modelling Taxonomy Geospatial Visualization

  3. Ecosystem Services „Humankind benefits from a multitude of resources and processes that are supplied by ecosystems. Collectively, these benefits are known as ecosystem services and include products like clean drinking water and processes such as the decomposition of wastes.” (Wikipedia) • Tools for Ecosystem Service Indicator Estimation • annual net primary production • total average carbon stock • energy absorption by evapotranspiration • ... • Tools for Model Calibration (SZTAKI Desktop Grid) • ESI Estimation for geographical areas (SZTAKI Desktop Grid)

  4. Biome-BGC Biogeochemical models are widely used to simulate the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems, including evergreen and deciduous forests, grasslands, shrubs and crops. These process-based models are driven by daily meteorological data, and handle the key ecophysiological, biogeochemical processes. http://www.ntsg.umt.edu/project/biome-bgc

  5. Biome-BGC on SZTAKI Desktop Grid @BioVel @SZTAKI Volunteer Resources

  6. Taverna workflows and Project Portal

  7. BioVeL-ViBRANT-agINFRA liaison meeting, Oxford, 24th January 2012 „5. agINFRA can introduce agricultural scientists to BioVeL to cooperate on developing some workflows useful in agricultural science (ecosystem function, invasives, etc.”

  8. Questions? BioVeL is funded by the European Commission 7th Framework Programme (FP7).It is part of its e-Infrastructures activity. BioVeL contributes to LifeWatch and GEO BON. BioVeL products are free to access. Desktop Grid extension is supported by SZTAKI and IDGF
