  1. The Writing Process English 9 Mr. Authier

  2. Step 1: Brainstorming • Brainstorming is the gathering and organizing of ideas. • It can include free-writing, filling out graphic organizers, creating outlines, answering a set of questions, or having a simple discussion.

  3. Step 2: Drafting • Drafting is when you begin to write. • Notice this is the second step, not the first. Never write without a plan. • Notice this is the second step, not the last. Do not turn in your First Draft as a final copy. It is only a starting point.

  4. Step 3: Revising • Revising is improving the content and organization of your essay. • Add details, facts, and examples • Change the order of things • DO NOT worry about spelling or grammar . . . Yet.

  5. Step 4: Editing • Editing is fixing grammar, spelling, and punctuation mistakes. • Most common mistakes: fragments, commas, misspelled words, wrong words. • Spell Check is okay, but be careful - see here.

  6. Step 5: Publishing • Publishing is sharing the final product. • Can be shared as an essay, poster, movie, song, Power Point, etc. • The Final product should always be neat, clean, and free of mistakes.

  7. Review • Brainstorming: gathering and organizing • Drafting: write it • Revising: improve content and organization • Editing: fix grammar, spelling, and punctuation • Publishing: share the final product
