  1. L1 Describes the poster. But no message identified. e.g. I can see the words, “Nobel Peace Prize 1988” at the top of the poster and “United Nations Peace-Keeping” at the bottom of the poster.

  2. L2 Inferences unsupported (Award 2 marks for one inference unsupported and additional mark for another) e.g. We can infer that the UN peacekeeping forces are successful in performing their role as peacekeepers. (2-3)

  3. L3 - Inferences supported (Award 3 marks for one inference supported and additional mark for another) e.g. We can infer that the UN peacekeeping forces are successful in performing their role as peacekeepers. (Message) This is evident from the words in the poster ‘Nobel Peace Prize 1988’ which show that the contributions of the peacekeepers are recognized and valued.

  4. L4 - Purpose , explained L3 + The poster is portraying a good image of the UN peacekeeping forces in having done a good job and earning the covered Nobel Prize. This is perhaps to silence its critics who may have doubts on the effectiveness of the UN peacekeeping role. (5)

  5. L3 – Inference, supported This cartoon tells me that the peacekeeping troops are not effective because they do not respond in time to the situation. This can be inferred because caption has phrases like ‘ending the violence’ before it got ‘out of control’, yet the cartoon shows tombstones and broken pots and wells. This implies that the peacekeeping troops were sent much too late for them to be effective and prevent what they hoped to achieve.

  6. L4 – L3+Purpose This cartoon is a taking a swipe at the UN Security Council with the purpose of showing that it is the obstacle to the UN peacekeeping troops’ effectiveness. This is because UN delays in granting its permission.
