2. Purpose of Oral Health Training According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, dental caries is now the most common chronic disease among children in the United States and also one of the most common transmissible, infectious diseases. One-fourth of U.S. children aged 2–5 years and half of those aged 12–15 years are affected by tooth decay. Every year nearly 52 million hours of school are lost due to dental disease. The burden of dental caries falls disproportionately to low income children; who also are least likely to have access to dental care.

3. Purpose of Oral Health Training There are many barriers to dental care for children. For every child without health insurance, nearly 3 are without dental insurance and the majority of dentists in Iowa are not accepting new Medicaid clients. The US is also experiencing a shortage of dentists.

4. Purpose of Oral Health Training The primary care provider (PCP) sees children for routine well visits approximately 12 times in the first 3 years. This makes the child’s PCP and medical home the logical site of early oral health care and the dental home for children under the age of 3 years.

5. Intended Audience This oral health training is geared to: • Pediatrician • Family physician • Pediatric or family medicine resident • Allied health professional: nurse, nursing assistant, nurse practitioner, physician assistant • Dental provider: pediatric or general dentist or dental hygienist However, other professionals involved with young children may also benefit from the information presented in this training.

11. Time for Completion of Modules • The time for completion of this training is approximately 1 hour for each module. If all modules 1-6 are completed, it is estimated that the learner will spend approximately 6 hours in the study and completion of all units.
