Potential or Available Target Areas • Swift Heavy Ion beams at NSCL • Unique material irradiation capability now at NSCL • 48Ca, 86Kr, 124Xe @ 140 MeV/A Up to 5 1011 ion/cm².s • 238U @ 80 MeV/A up to 1.25 109 ion/cm².s • 2 possibilities: • Parasitic • Dedicated irradiation area • For the future • Low energy electron gun with a minimum power of 30kW F. MatX - Strategic Partnership “FRIB-Materials under Extreme Conditions” • Statement of Purpose Leverage unique MSU expertise and capabilities to address extreme materials problems of critical local and national importance • Develop and study key materials under extreme radiation, stress, temperature conditions • Develop a broad MSU team to leverage NSCL (and future FRIB) heavy ion beams and MSU’s expertise in material science and engineering • Translate characterization methods and promising materials to applications • Establish international scientific leadership, industrial connections and pursue intellectual property possibilities • Focus on graphite, diamond and Ti alloys as representative extreme materials • Important for diverse applications (aerospace, nuclear, accelerators) • Important for NSCL and critical for FRIB mission F.
