Q & A • Why did Barney eat his breakfast quickly? He ate his breakfast quickly because he wanted to go to the chalk-pit again to see Stig. 2. What time of the year do you think it was? It was autumn. 3. How did Barney manage to get Stig out? Barney tied some carrots with the garden string and lowered them to the den. He swung the string to and fro and literary knocked the carrots on Stig’s door and then, he called him to get out.
4. Why does Barney think Stig is lucky? Barney thinks that Stig is lucky because he has no one to ask him how he got so messy with chalk dust all over him. 5. Why does Barney feel that Stig ‘has got brains’? Because Stig got an old straw hat with ribbons from his den for Barney to use instead of the wooden box to lower the rest of the jam jars.

Chapter 2 (summary) – Digging with Stig • Barney rushes back to the pit to see Stig the next day, but as he gets closer he begins to feel as if he imagined it all. He lowers apples and carrots down on a string as presents for Stig. On entering the pit, he notices that Stig has been digging. Stig teaches him to dig. Later that day Barney takes presents for Stig– some tin cans to make a chimney and some jam jars to make windows.
