Overview • “Students choosing AP English Literature and Composition should be interested in studying literature of various periods and genres and using this wide reading knowledge in discussions of literary topics” • Focus on: the experience of literature, the interpretation of literature and the evaluation of literature

  3. Basic Objectives • Identify Literary devices and explain how they create meaning in a particular text • Develop a sophisticated writing and reading styles. • Become familiar with literary theory and movements.

  4. Types of Writing • To Understand: Response and Reaction papers • To Explain: Analysis, Interpretation, and Explication papers: Language and Structure • To Evaluate: Making and Explaining arguments and exploring social/ cultural value • activities: annotation, free-writing, journaling.

  5. Units of Study • 1. The Short Story 5. Poetry • 2. Satire 6. Modern Drama • 3 Tragedy 7. Research • 4 The Novel

  6. Outside Readings. • 5 books • (2) Pre 1900 • (2) Post 1900 • (1) Shakespeare
