Function Definition FUNCTION DEFINITION
Welcome to Representing Functions! This is the first lesson in pre calculus and the starting point for all future calculus knowledge. This free calculus lesson starts with the fundamentals of representing functions.
This is a precursor to differential calculus and is very important even though it contains a lot of algebra review. Functions arrive whenever one quantity depends on another. We examine the different ways to describe functions; verbally, numerically, visually, and algebraically. Number sets show the direct relationship between two numbers. They are used to 'map' one number (the domain) to another number (the range).
Number sets are used to describe functions visually. The formal definition of a function is; " A function is a rule that assigns each element in set A exactly one element in set B". This is demonstrated by examining the relationship between two number sets. The example in this pre-calculus lesson shows how to find the domain and range of a linear function. We show that x and y are elements of the real number set for any linear function.
