  2. Dr. Katchen’s Office is A512 Office Hours: • Mondays 1:00 – 3:00 • Tuesdays 1:00 – 3:00 • Wednesdays 1:00 – 3:00 (when there is no meeting scheduled) • I’m here every day (call 2705 first to make appointment or send an e-mail to katchen@mx.nthu.edu.tw)

  3. In this course you will learn some fascinating facts about the English language. These include the sound system of Modern English as well as the historical developments of the English language, especially as they relate to the make-up of Modern English. We will also take a look at the varieties of English, especially differences between American and British English.

  4. Textbook: An Introduction to the English Language This is a collection of materials. A copy will be loaned to the class leader for two weeks. If you want to copy it, it is your own business.

  5. Supplemental Materials:The Story of English, by R. McCrum, W. Cran, & R. MacNeil. We will use excerpts of the videotapes in class, which will be either uploaded to e-learn in Windows Media format or made available to you in VCD format. The full videotapes are also available in C513a. Transcripts of the parts we use will be posted on e-learn.

  6. Classes will be conducted lecture-style with much multimedia support. That means it’s not enough to just read the book. You have to come to class. We will take attendance. Sometimes there will be in-class quizzes. Homework assignments will be posted on e-learn.

  7. What is e-learn? • E-learn is the web-based learning platform Blackboard used at NTHU http://elearn.nthu.edu.tw/ • Students have to log in and register. Ms. Lin will help you is you have difficulty. • Class materials will be posted there. Except for quizzes and exams, we will have a paperless class. You want it, you download it.

  8. Grading • First Mid-term Exam: 20% • Second Mid-term Exam: 20% • Final Exam: 30% • Homework assignments and quizzes: 30%

  9. Attendance will be checked every class. Missing more than one class will result in the deduction of one point from the final grade for each additional absence.
