This forthcoming handbook delves into the realms of multidisciplinarity, interdisciplinarity, and transdisciplinarity, examining their definitions, methodologies, and theoretical underpinnings. It offers insights into bridging disciplinary boundaries, restructuring knowledge, and advancing a philosophy of interdisciplinarity for the future of education and research. Published by the Center for the Study of Interdisciplinarity (CSID) at North Texas, this resource aims to provide guidance, networking opportunities, and strategies for successful interdisciplinary projects.

The Handbook is a project of the • Center for the Study of Interdisciplinarity (CSID) • at North Texas • Interdisciplinary centers for the study of a given issue are common, but no few Centers engage in research on interdisciplinarity in itself. • CSID seeks to • provide resources and networking for researchers and students interested in interdisciplinary research and education; • promote experiments in inter- and transdisciplinarity • identify institutional barriers to interdisciplinarity • establish indicators for the success of interdisciplinary projects
Definitions Multidisciplinarity: juxtaposes disciplines. Fosters wider knowledge, information, and methods. Disciplines remain separate, disciplinary elements retain their original identity, and the existing structure of knowledge is not questioned. Interdisciplinarity: a field of study that crosses traditional boundaries between academic disciplines, which integrates these different approaches or methods Methodological ID: borrowing a method or concept from another discipline in order to test a hypothesis, to answer a research question, or to help develop a theory. Eg, neurophysiological measures in psychology. Theoretical ID: a more comprehensive general view and epistemological form. Eg, philosophy of science policy; biochemistry Bridge Building and Restructuring Transdisciplinarity: going beyond the academy; case-based or problem-based approaches
Toward a Philosophy of Interdisciplinarity • An Interdisciplinary Philosophy • A 21st theory of knowledge production/future of the university • The humanities as bridge between STEM disciplines and society • Interdisciplinarity and the limits of knowledge
