The Prevalence of Evidence-based Drug Use Prevention Curricula (EBC) in the Nations Middle Schools Over 20 years of prevention science has produced many EBCs for school settings Long-term follow-up demonstrates impact that lasts into adulthood (with crossover effects) Since 1998, many attempts have been made to promote implementation of EBCs For example, schools receiving funds through Dept of Eds Safe and Drug Free schools are required to implement EBCs on registries Current study tracks use of universal EBCs into U.S. public middle schools in 1999 and 2005 Ringwalt, et al. (2009). Prevention Science, 10, 33-40. A number of effective drug use prevention programs have been developed through prevention science over the past 20 years. Since 1998, many attempts have been made to promote the implementation of these evidence-based curricula in public schools. For example, schools that receive funds through the Department of Educations Safe and Drug Free Schools initiative are required to implement EBCs that are listed on specified registries. The current study tracks the use of universal EBCs in US public middle schools in 1999, about the time when these efforts for dissemination began, and in 2005. A nationally representative sample of schools was identified. At each school, the individual who taught drug prevention lessons completed a survey that asked if they used any of the drug prevention curricula listed, as well as to list any curricula they used which were not on the list. Ten of the 26 drug prevention curricula listed were identified as EBCs by the SAMHSA registry. A number of effective drug use prevention programs have been developed through prevention science over the past 20 years. This change is a significant increase and indicates that more schools use evidence-based curricula now than did in 1999. However, it also shows that most middle schools do not use an evidence-based curricula for drug prevention. An additional question that was asked on the survey was Which program do you use the most? So, if an instructor identified 4-5 programs, he/she would indicate the one they used the most. This graph shows that 23% of schools used an evidence-based curricula the most in their schools. Given over 98% of middle schools surveyed stated that they implemented any drug prevention curricula, that means the programs used the most by 75% of schools were not those identified as effective. Under what conditions do schools choose EBCs and continue to implement them? What adaptation, coaching, and technical assistance processes facilitate sustained implementation of EBCs?     21. Population Effects of CTC Compared with control communities, CTC significantly reduced the incidence of tobacco use, alcohol use and delinquent behavior community wide by end of 8th grade. Compared with control communities, CTC significantly reduced the prevalence of smokeless tobacco use, current drinking, binge drinking and delinquent behavior community wide in 8th grade.
