Luther did NOT support Peasants War- so Reformation did not lead to social equality- Catholics encouraged to reform to end violence

Counter Reformation • CAUSES: -response to the spread of Protestantism • -some Catholics felt reform was overdue • CHARACTERISTICS: -Council of Trent redefined doctrine • -Jesuits taught spirituality and service • -worked to bring about reform • -women took on more active roles • EFFECTS: -church regains support of Catholics in many • European countries • -majority of Europeans remain Catholic
