Biotic Index Using macroinvertebrates as an indirect measurement of pollution
A healthy stream will have many organisms that cannot tolerate pollution
Calculations • Count the animals on the index that match those found in your sample. • Count the number of types of animals that are circled in each group and write that number in the box provided. Only count the number of types of animals circled in each group. • Multiply the entered number from each group by the group value. • Do this for all groups. • Total the number of animals circled. • Total the calculated values for all groups. • Divide the total values by the total number of types of animals that were found: TOTAL VALUES (b.) / TOTAL ANIMALS (a).
Answer Group 1: 2 x 4 = 8 Group 2: 2 x 3 = 6 Group 3: 0 x 2 = 0 Group 4: 1 x 1 = 1 15/5 = 3.00 The health of the stream is good.
