  2. Basic information 1. Total geographical area : 16,57,900 Ha 2. Total cultivable area : 7,22,464 Ha 3. Gross cropped area : 3,86,797 Ha 4. Net cropped area : 3,08,887 Ha 5. Net irrigated area : 68,550 Ha 6. Total food grain production : 4,36,113 MT (2006-07)

(ii)Strengthening of ISOPOM : • Not implemented in the State, however pulses and oilseeds • programmes are taken up under Macro-management mode • (iii)Development of quality seed and availability in time • 25-30 % of the seeds requirement particularly cereals are made available from State owned seed farms. The remaining quantity is obtained from the certified seed agencies particularly NSC and SFCI • Local Rajmash popularly known as KHOLAR is grown chemical free on commercial scale and the seed requirement is made locally as truthfully labeled seed. • (iv)Revamp of extension system : grass root level • SAMETI already established • Formed 3(three) ATMA districts out of 11 disrticts • Proposed to cover the entire State under this programme • State is already in full implementation of Extension Reform

(vi) Measures undertaken to achieve 4% agricultural growth by tapping local potential • Systematic planning : crop zoning • Improved cropping system • Strengthen extension support : ATMA • Improved package of practices • Use of improved local cultivars including HYV • Improved indigenous practices blended with modern technique • Improved soil and water conservation methods • Mechanized farming • Strengthen IPM practices • Strengthen INM practices • Post harvest technology • Prospective Market linkages • Protection, preservation and maintenance of the natural forests add value to the productivity of the agricultural produce • Forests ensure water supply for the wet paddy cultivation, improving upon the soil fertility • Alder based jhum cultivation has advantages over the traditional method where the nitrogen fixing tree species add to the soil fertility improving the productivity • cont……
