  1. Creating a Metadata Unit at the MIT Libraries ALCTS/CCS Cataloging Norms Discussion Group January 12, 2008

  2. An Experiment • MIT Libraries partnered with MIT’s OpenCourseWare (OCW) in 2002 • The Libraries tested and designed the metadata module in OCW’s content management system • The Libraries created a Metadata Production Assistant position and Metadata Specialist position in 2003 for a 4 year agreement (and we’re still going!)

  3. New Challenges • Demanding deadlines • Using multiple new standards • Increasing dependence on non-librarians for bibliographic information

  4. It’s not just description… • Subjects and keywords: Classification of Instructional Programs, LCSH, uncontrolled keywords (to name a few) • Technical Metadata determined by the format of learning object • Rights Metadata, including Creative Commons licenses (“some rights reserved”)

  5. How is this metadata used? • OCW users can search courses on a particular subject, or they can look for individual “learning objects” – exams, course notes, lab experiments, etc. – to adapt for their own use • The metadata is reused when old versions of the courses are archived in DSpace

  6. New Customers • Singapore-MIT Alliance: enhancing Dublin Core Metadata in DSpace • LOLA: Learning Objects, Learning Activities • MIT’s Information Systems & Services: Best Practices for podcasting • CSAIL research project

  7. Expansion • AACR2/MARC Catalogers participated in CSAIL research project • Image metadata for MIT’s Visual Collection

  8. Future directions • More catalogers creating metadata using multiple standards • Libraries’ digital collections

  9. For More Information… • Rebecca L. Lubas rll@mit.edu • MIT Cataloging & Metadata Services http://libstaff.mit.edu/colserv/cat/monocat/cams.html • Metadata Services Unit http://libraries.mit.edu/metadata/index.html
