City Growth By: Cameron Hartley Kyle Summerville Eli Adams
Why did the gap widen between the rich and the poor as cities grew? • There were a lot of problems that occurred in the cities as it grew and it affected a lot of people. • The middle and upper classes realized this and decided to move out into the suburbs. • The wealthiest people in the cities owned country estates that are completely isolated from poverty, and this makes the classes farther separated.
Why did political divisions emerge in cities? • The rapid population growth made a bigger demand for many things such as transportation systems, sewage disposal, and electrical services. • The fast growth made it difficult to govern the large amount of people.
How did political machines work? • Political machines worked by an exchange of favors by district leaders and district residents. • Districted leaders would help many people get jobs, and then in exchange the residents would reelect them and their people to office.
Who are some examples of “bosses”? • George B. Cox • Cincinnati • William Marcy Tweed • New York City
