  • Inside the crazy house
  • no one sleeps.
  • Mother sings falsetto
  • to the blaring radio,
  • talks to strangers
  • over the telephone,
  • changes her outfits every hour,
  • stamps up and down stairs
  • all night long.

We bury our heads under pillows,
  • try to disappear between sheets
  • pray father will make her stop
  • but his shouting and swearing
  • can't subdue her.
  • He dials 911.
  • Sirens and her screaming
  • police officers and her crying
  • handcuffed they haul
  • our mother
  • away.

  • My mother...
  • I spent the first half of adult life
  • running away from her
  • afraid I’d be sucked in
  • to her whirlwind of mania
  • spinning around
  • unable to sleep or eat
  • singing opera through the night,
  • changing dresses on the hour,
  • parading like a movie star
  • through hotel lobbies.

I spend the second half of my life
  • running toward her –
  • rescuing her –
  • strokes sizzling her memory,
  • mellowing her to a marshmallow,
  • a sweet teary, diapered dementia
  • resident living only
  • in the present,
  • yesterday blank,
  • future lost,
  • Unable to answer my whys.
  • Today I’m still left with
  • questions to explore
  • and motherly love.

They even like the fresh mint taste

of my new toothpaste

barely waiting their turn on my brush.

intoxicated they’re zigzagging across pine.

These days I hear myself talking aloud:

Why don’t you go outside to play?

It’s such a warm sunny day!

But my babies don’t listen

and my cajoling doesn’t work

so I just turn on the water

and wish them sayonara.
