FDI AS A SOURCE OF PATENT ACTIVITY IN V4 • FDIIMPORTANCE IN V4 • new technologies, capital sources, know-how • →higher productivity , economic growth, competitiveness • V4 challenges: • creative and knowledge based aspects, economic downturn • innovative approach as a chance for recovery • indicators: • total FDI inward stocks coming to the V4 region from the 15 most innovative countries • number of patent applications • source of data:Eurostat statistics, years 2000-2010

FDI AS A SOURCE OF PATENT ACTIVITY IN V4 • HYPOTHESIS AND METHODS • hypothesis A: • positive correlation between FDI inward stocks and number of patent applications in V4 region in total • hypothesis B: • positive correlation between FDI inward stocks originated from the 15 most innovative countries (TOP15) and number of patent applications in V4 region • linear regression and correlation analysis methods

FDI AS A SOURCE OF PATENT ACTIVITY IN V4 • ANALYSIS OF FDI INWARD STOCKS • FDI increased by 462 % in V4 region in 2000-2010 • higher dynamics during 2004-200755 % of absolute change, • (24,3 % in 2004) • the highest relative change - Slovakia 675,3 % • the biggest share - Poland 41,2 % • dynamics of FDI from TOP15 similar: • 413,5 % (2000-2010) • 58,5 % (2004-2007) • share of Poland 40,7 % • TOP15 represent 60 % of all FDI

FDI AS A SOURCE OF PATENT ACTIVITY IN V4 • ANALYSIS OF FDI PATENT APPLICATIONS • rose by 235 % (2000-2010) • thehighest growth – Poland 610 % • thelowest growth - Hungary 67 % • the lowest share – Slovakia 6% • higher dynamics during 2007-201055 %of absolute change, • (35 % in 2004, 24 % 2006)
