  1. AP Statistics Ms. Beatty

  2. Welcome! • Using ‘stuff’ in the room (hall passes, pencil sharpeners, sink, microwave, paper, calculators, cabinets, computers, boards, hole punch, desks etc.) • Seating arrangement and attendance • New Bell Schedule • Go get books in library- need student I.D.

  3. In the Right Class? • Prerequisite: Algebra 3,4 or equivalent; trig and/or senior status recommended • Honors/AP/CU Gold • Beatty: 6th or Barnett 1 • Objectives/content: college level introductory statistics, non-calculus based – required by as many majors as calculus

  4. Materials • Paper, pencil, pen, binder (store notes, homework), textbook, graphing calculator (like TI-84) • Cell phones not to be used as calculators in class – at home, that’s up to you

  5. Grading • Assignments • Assessments • Scale • Student Connect/Class calendar • Tutor Center • 5th period Plan

  6. Syllabus and Advice See handouts!

  7. What is Statistics? • Start with a research question • Produce data to study the question • Analyze the data using statistical mathematics – probability, regression, confidence intervals, hypothesis tests…. • Make an inference (conclusion) based on the data analysis.

  8. Hiring Discrimination • Real world scenario based on textbook author’s son’s experience • 25 pilots pass captain exam but only 8 positions available. 15 male, 10 female. • 8 chosen ‘randomly’, ends up being 5 female and 3 male captains • Lottery process gender-biased?

  9. Research Question • Is it plausible that the result seemingly favoring females to be chosen as captain is simply a result of the chance variability due to random assignment of subjects to groups and NOT the result of some kind of unfair intervention?

  10. Now what? • Simulation of what would happen randomly • How likely is the result of 5 females 3 males to happen by chance based on the simulation? • What does that lead you to decide in answer to the research question? • Are you certain about your decision? How confident are you? Should the males file a lawsuit? Why or why not?

  11. To Do • Read pages 2-12 in textbook and peruse the front and back matter (table of contents, appendices, etc.) Take notes and bring them to class tomorrow. • Be prepared to finish Hiring Discrimination Task • We will be doing Chs. 1 and 2, then 11-13. See syllabus for problems that will be assigned – keep track on class board and website.
