  2. Southdown • The Southdown is a medium- to small-sized breed. • It is a polled, medium-wool breed raised mostly for its meat. • Early maturing breed. • Ewes have good lambing ability and average milk production.

  3. Hampshire • The Hampshire is a large, medium-wool breed. • It has a mild disposition and is polled. • The breed is noted for rapid growth and efficient feed conversion.

  4. Suffolk • The Suffolk is the most common sheep breed in the U.S., comprising about 40 percent of the total sheep population. • It is a medium-wool, polled breed that is raised mostly for its meat.

  5. Shropshire • The Shropshire is a dual-purpose breed suitable for both meat and wool production. • They are a medium-sized sheep. • One of the heaviest wool producers among medium-wool breeds.

  6. Dorset • The Dorset is a medium-sized, medium-wool breed. • Both horned and polled varieties, though the polled variety is more common. • The ewes are good mothers and good milkers. • Dorsets are the second most common breed in the United States.

  7. Delaine Merino • The Delaine Merino is a fine-wool breed of medium size. • The Merino breeds originated in Spain more than 1,200 years ago. • They are noted for producing the best wool in the world.

  8. Rambouillet • This is a fine-wool breed. • The breed is French in origin and descends from the Spanish Merino, an old breed that produces some of the world’s finest wool. • The Rambouillet also have good carcass characteristics and so are considered a dual-purpose breed.

  9. Montadale • The Montadale is a medium-wool, dual-purpose breed. • They are noted for producing high-quality carcasses and excellent wool that is very white in color.

  10. Columbia • The Columbia is a crossbred wool breed developed by the USDA in 1912. • The breed produces large ewes with large lambs and good wool yield. • Columbia sheep are bred to survive well on the range conditions of the western United States.

  11. Barbado • This is a hair sheep that originated in Texas. • Males are horned and females are polled. • The color is usually tan, tan with a pale or black belly, or “pied,” meaning that it has two or more colors in large spots or blotches.

  12. Cheviot • The Cheviot is a small, medium-wooled, polled sheep. • It is raised primarily for meat and produces a good-quality lamb carcass. • It is a hardy sheep developed centuries ago in Scotland and England.
