  1. SQUIRREL ISLAND Directions- • Read your island description. • Design TWO squirrels that have adapted to your environment of the island you have chosen. Brainstorm the types of adaptations your squirrel should have according to the type of environment you have. Develop at LEAST FOUR ADAPTATIONS for EACH squirrel. Explain why you think these adaptations work in your environment. • On three sheets of white paper, DRAW the island and your two squirrels separately. (one per page) Be sure to draw the squirrel large enough so that I can see your adaptations! Use a PENCIL to draw your rough draft. • On the same side as your drawing, write sentences describing the FOUR adaptations for each squirrel and explain why those adaptations work for the environment assigned to you. • In your island picture IDENTIFY BY LABELING each of the following: • Producer/Autotroph • Primary Consumer • Secondary Consumer • Tertiary Consumer/Top Predator • 1 Biotic factor • 1 Abiotic Factor Neatness and attention to detail matters!

  2. Oh NO!! Island Catastrophe!! Take out a separate lined sheet of paper and write what you see at the top of your paper if you have… Island 1: The Crown of Thorns starfish invades and destroys the corals in the reef, leaving the reef animals without a place to live. Island 2: The tides have receded, causing the tide pools to dry out and causing all of the small organisms that live there to die out. Island 3: A pack of coyotes drift to the island after a hurricane. They prey upon the birds and their eggs. Island 4: The volcano at the center of the island becomes active again and erupts, sending most of the plant-life into a fiery disaster.

  3. Your assignment-Choose one of the following: Essay: Write three paragraphs describing what would happen to your two squirrels now that this event has happened on your island. Paragraph 1: Describe in 4-5 sentences how this disaster has affected the island and the organisms that live there. Paragraph 2: Describe in 4-5 sentences what has happened to your squirrel number 1 as a result of this event. Paragraph 3: Describe in 4-5 sentences what has happened to your squirrel number 2 as a result of this event. OR A picture is worth a thousand words: Redraw your island after the catastrophe and SHOW IN DETAIL how the island and organisms are affected. How are your squirrels now dealing with this dramatic change. Based on your squirrels adaptations, who will survive? How will they survive? Who will die? Why?
