Holden V8 - Engines & Components

With today's ever-changing automotive landscape, many modifications and upgrades are being made to our vehicles in order to provide improved performance. One such modification that has gained a lot of popularity in recent years is the installation of a 351w camshaft. A 351w camshaft is a cam profile designed for both power and torque production on an engine equipped with either a four-barrel carburetor or fuel injection system. Although the 351w cam may be a good fit for your vehicle, it may not always be the best camshaft for your vehicle.

  1. A Historic Journal On Holden V8 - Engines & Components The Holden, which many Americans mistake for a copy of the Chevy small-block V8, is actually quite different. The bore spacing is 4.40 inches, the same as the SBC, but that's where the similarities end. The timing-chain housing is die-cast aluminum, similar to a Buick 215 V8, with an external oil pump mounted on it, allowing to use of both front-sump along with rear-sump oil pans. To fulfill local requirements, the Holden V8 was designed to be especially light and compact, mirroring the mini dimensions of Australian sedans, and to utilize simplified cores as well as tooling due to the lower production volume. The oil pump is pushed from the front of the v8 camshaft, but the ignition distributor is pushed from the back, which is unusual for an American production V8. The firing order is 12784563, with cylinders 2468 on the left & 1357 on the right.

  2. The pushrod valvetrain is identical to the second-generation Olds V8, with stamped steel metal rocker arms on the pedestals as well as extra-travel hydraulic lifters that eliminate the need for lash adjustment. The Holden, like many popular American v8 engines, has been hot-rodded in each and every way imaginable for applications ranging from drag races to water skiing. Normally, an industry sprang up to help these attempts, just as it did in the United States for the flathead Ford V8 as well as the Small-Block Chevy. Holden V8 was also prepared by Repco, the same company that supplied the engines for Jack Brabham's 1966 Formula One championship to compete in the Australian Formula 5000 series. In their heyday, Holden V8s won numerous races and championships, most notably in the Australian Touring Car Championship as well as its successors.
