  3. Ford started making the C4 gearbox in 1964. The 2-speed Ford-O-Matic transmission was intended to be replaced by the C4, also known as the 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic transmission. The C4 was primarily available in automobiles during its first year of production, including the Ford Fairlane and the Mercury Comet. The Ford F-Series trucks and eventually the Ford Bronco received this transmission the following year as well. The Ford Mustang and Ford Torino were two further well-known vehicles that featured this transmission. C4 Automatic Transmission: Technical Specs Due mostly to its simplicity and small weight, the C4 transmission has grown to be a very popular gearbox for use in hot rods and other racing applications.
