  1. Labor Assignments • In either job or Batch production systems, the problem is to determine the number of workers needed in each station to achieve the required output from a given production line • The following example illustrates this problem lec# 7 & 8

Labor Assignments (cont..) • Consider the production as shown in fig.5.12, requiring 20 stations to complete the assembly • For convenience the stations are numbered form left to right in the direction of material flow. • Subassemblies 1 & 2 are combined in Station 5, which is also common input station for the three parallel branches 6-9, 7-10, & 8-11 • These branches are required in this example bcz of limitations on space, equipment & labor available to work at the stations lec# 7 & 8

Labor Assignments (cont..) • The output form three branches, i.e, from station 9, 10 & 11- goes into common stage, from which parts for station 12 & 13 are drawn • In station 17, two subassemblies are joined in the ratio 2:5. • Finally station 18 supplies both station 19 & 20, where the final processing is accomplished • Fig.5.12 also show the input / output requirements per worker at each station; for example, in station 18 a worker will require 16 units of input & will produce 12 good units lec# 7 & 8

Labor Assignments (cont..) • Table 5.11 presents the tabular approach. • the information contained in columns 1,2,3,4,5 & 10 is known for the given product • By way of illustration consider station 17, production per worker at this location is 9 units, but the next work station, station 18, requires 16 units per worker as its input. The maximum number of workers that can be assigned to station 17 is 8 lec# 7 & 8

Labor Assignments (cont..) • In this example the required output is 16 units from station 20 & 18 units from unit from station 19 • After accounting for present inventories by completing column 2, the procedure is to work backword from the last work area (station 20), filling in all the columns for each station . lec# 7 & 8
