Subjects • Complete Subject: • In every sentence there is a complete subject that is made up of all the words that tell whom or what the sentence is about. It may have 1 word or several words. • Example: Many different groups make up a family today. **The bolded words here are the complete subject. • Lets try a few together: Take out a sticky note • Most people in Mexico live in cities and towns • A typical town or village includes a plaza. • The older buildings are made of stones. • Mexico is south of the U.S. border.
Subjects Continued • Now in every complete subject there is a simple subject. • Simple Subject: • This is the most important word in the complete subject. It is usually a noun or pronoun. • In the example from before : Many different groups – groups would be the simple subject. It is the noun in the sentence. • Lets try a few together again. Use that sticky note. • Most people in Mexico live in cities and towns • A typical town or village includes a plaza. • The older buildings are made of stones. • Mexico is south of the U.S. border.
Predicates • Complete Predicate: • In every sentence there is a complete predicate, which tells what the subject is or does. It may have 1 word or several words. • Example: Many different groups make up a family today. **The bolded words here are the complete predicate. You will notice it is the rest of the sentence after the subject. • Lets try a few together: Use that sticky note again. • Most people in Mexico live in cities and towns • A typical town or village includes a plaza. • The older buildings are made of stones. • Mexico is south of the U.S. border.
Predicates Continued • Now in every complete predicate there is a simple predicate. • Simple Predicate: • This is the most important word in the complete predicate. It is a verb. • In the example from before : - make up a family today. make would be the simple predicate.
