The first immigrants, and miners where the first to get the most wealthy, and the most gold. Many men started companies with friends and split the profitt. One company that started and is still around was Wells Fargo.

The miners died from exhaustion and from rocks and other objects falling on them. • It was very hard work and had no guarantee of finding gold and becoming rich. • The death rate increased rapidly from mining accidents. One out of every five miners that came to California died in 6 months or less.

  8. 49ers • California got their football team name, the 49ers, from the gold rush that occurred in 1848. This name came from the gold prospectors that came in 1849. This is how they got the name of the 49ers. This name reflected on the men and woman who traveled west to California for gold.
