  1. Objective Explore how solar power is generated and assess its impact on a rural village in India.

  2. Homework check. • Name 5 advantages of using solar power.

  3. Starter Taking turns, ask your partner 3 questions about the item shown in this picture. Your partner should try to answer the questions.

  4. A PV (photovoltaic) cell is made of 2 different layers of material, each containing silicon. • The cellconverts sunlight into direct current electricity (DC). • The DC is transported to inverters which convert DC to usable AC electricity used to light a home or run electrical appliances & equipment.

  5. Activity 1 • In your notebook, make a flow chart to illustrate how solar energy is generated from the sun. Include as much detail as is possible.

  6. Over 2 billion people around the world do not have access to electricity. Most live in poor rural areas beyond the reach of the national grid. • In 1997 households in the Gosaba in India were equipped with solar power. It brought many benefits. • Before 1997 the people of Gosaba used kerosene for lighting and cooking. It turned the walls black with soot, irritated eyes and lungs, gave dim light and even set houses on fire! GOSABA

  7. Activity 2 • The table below shows the results of a survey in Gosaba. Which is the most common reason people gave for liking solar power? Why is this reason so important for people? • Display the results of the survey in the form of a bar graph in your notebook. • Describe your finished graph in a paragraph in your notebook explaining to what extent solar power has made a difference in Gosaba. (write about how life was for them before and after solar power)
