Manual information System • A system which does not use any computer devices. • All data would be kept in other ways, mainly paper. • As a few examples: Before accounts, payroll and spreadsheet applications, people would have worked out this kind of information on paper. People would have handwritten letters or used typewriters instead of word processors. Graphs and diagrams would have been drawn by hand instead of using computer software to do them.
Disadvantages of Manual systems • Very time consuming • Waste of paper material • High cost • Need more persons to work on it • Take up a lot of space • Difficult to organize • Can have many mistakes
Advantages • Cheap • Cannot be destroyed by an accidental power loss • Hackers cannot access a manual filing system from another computer
Advantages of Computer systems • Computers can form calculations quickly and efficiently • · They use up less room • · Data can be retrieved quickly and easily • · Security is tight and hard to break into. • · Documents that are lost can often be retrieved • · Mistakes and changes made can be corrected or changed easily by using the backspace or delete keys rather than the whole document being redone.
Case study • Think about a supermarket • List down the computerized systems that you can think of • Provide at least 1 advantage for using each computerized system.
