  3. Real life problems….. • There were 13 children on the bus, 5 more children got on in Standish and 7 more children got on in Appley Bridge. How many children were on the bus altogether?

  5. Beginning to use column addition, step 1….. • Continue to use partitioning • 364+ 34 =300+60+4+30+4 =300+90+8 • Then we recombine it all, to be left with the answer, 398.

  6. Using column addition, step 2…… • Continue to use partitioning. • 364+54= 364 + 54 300 110 + 8 418

  7. Column addition…. • The final step, when the children have a sound grasp of place value & of the whole process… • 364 + 54 418 1

  9. An everyday tool …… • Mathematics is something that we use in our everyday lives, all of the time. We are here to teach children and to give them a variety of strategies to cope. All children may not all end up at the same point, but they will all have some understanding of how to work addition sums out.
