  2. Job Duties & Responsibilities Marine biologists address problems and issues facing marine life. They systematically gather data in the field or laboratory with special sampling gear and monitoring equipment. They interpret and evaluate the data they collect, and then write scientific reports for clients or supervisors. They may also help make decisions or solve problems. Sometimes they deal with problems of great economic or political importance. Marine biologists work in a surprising variety of disciplines. Examples include planetology, meteorology, physics, chemistry, geology, physical oceanography, paleontology, and biology. Marine biologists also includes archaeology, anthropology, sociology, engineering and other studies of human relationships with the sea.

  3. Qualities and Skills A marine scientist must have a love for animals and enjoy working in the water and outdoors in order to appreciate their job. Strong communication skills, teamwork skills, and organizational skills are also important qualities to have for those pursuing a career in this field.

  4. Salary The annual salary for a marine biologist is in the range of $41,000 to $89,000. The salaries vary depending on each person’s education, experience, and specific discipline. Location and other factors also affect individual salaries.

  5. Education To be a marine scientist you must be competent in biology, chemistry, and the physical sciences. You must have a good foundation in mathematics, computer skills, communication, and writing. You should have a keen interest in conservation and coastal and marine resources. The minimum education required for someone entering the marine biology field is a bachelor’s degree. For a high-paying job, you need a master's or doctoral degree.
