  1. NSA Spring Meeting March 17, 2011 NSA Engineering Services Report

  2. Engineering Services Report Dan Walker, P.E. Thomas Associates, Inc. NSA Engineering Services Report

  3. AAMA/NPEA/NSA 2100 Update • AAMA staff reports substantive comments received • Second public review will go out • Only those changed portions of document • Section 5.2.1 – Structural Calculations (Fenestration) NSA Engineering Services Report

  4. NSA Component Testing Guideline • Document is “complete” • Living document, under continuous improvement • Certain sections may benefit from expansion • Use of the document will help identify areas for improvement • Will be available on Member’s Only section of website or on NSA SVO NSA Engineering Services Report

  5. Report of ICC Hearings • 2012 IBC, IRC, IECC, Etc. • Planned publication in April 2011 • Adoption / implementation depends on local municipality • Currently, as of 1-28-2011 most states have adopted I-codes statewide • Non-ICC Code - • 2000 IBC – 2 States (MO, NE) • 2003 IBC – 3 States (CT, KS, SD) • 2006 IBC – 25 (includes DC) • 2009 IBC – 21 • 2012 IBC – 0 Source: http://www.iccsafe.org/gr/Documents/stateadoptions.pdf

  6. Report of ICC Hearings • Changes of Interest • Adoption of ASCE 7-10 • General • 40% bigger than previous, reportedly due to larger font • Occupancy Category now called Risk Category • Performance based design procedures included • Wind • Multiple wind maps with occupancy importance incorporated  Strength design wind speeds, therefore ASD load factor = 0.60 • New simplified wind procedure in ASCE 7 • IBC will also retain the Alternate All-Heights provision • Seismic • New maps

  7. ICC / State Codes & Standards Update • Monitoring State Building / Energy Codes • Example: State of North Carolina Energy Code • 2012 code was going to raise the sunroom roof and wall insulation from R-19  R-24 in CZ 1-4 and from R-24  R-30 in CZ 5-8. • In order to monitor the ICC model code, as well as national energy codes (IECC, ASHRAE 90.1, 90.2, IgCC, LEED, etc.) we have not focused on the individual state codes • In order to take on this task it would help to have a list of high-priority states NSA Engineering Services Report

  8. State Code Monitoring • TC identified the following as high priority states: • Florida 1 Craig W. • Indiana 2 Craig J. • Maryland 1 Craig W. • Massachusetts 1 Lyndon • Rhode Island 1 Lyndon • Connecticut 2 Lyndon • Michigan 2 Luay • Minnesota 1 Martin • New York 1 Chu • New Jersey 1 Chu • North Carolina 1 Martin • Ohio 2 Martin • Pennsylvania 1 Zach • Virginia 1 Craig J. NSA Engineering Services Report

  9. Technical Committee Survey • Code Monitoring • Expand State Code Monitoring • Papers • Energy Code Compliance • Fire Requirements • Green Issues • Design Guides • Foundations • Environmental Loads (Examples) • Roof Issues / Shingle Attachments / Fan Beams • Existing House Evaluation (Examples) / Checklist • Deck Design (Examples) – Standard Designs NSA Engineering Services Report

  10. Technical Committee Survey (Continued) • Codes / Reports • SIPA ESR • Lateral Resistance with Roofs • Studio • Gable (A-Frame) • Stand Alone Room • Industry Testing / Projects • Fire Performance (NFPA 286) – Foam Plastics • Energy Modeling NSA Engineering Services Report

  11. Possible Future TC Projects Report of TC meeting discussions Results of Technical Project Survey NSA Engineering Services Report

  12. Sunroom Foundation & Deck Design Guide • Develop a design guide for NSA member company engineers, third party engineers and contractors to show the most common solutions to sunroom concrete foundation and wood deck design. Several example designs for each scenario would be presented including: • TEK 1: Concrete Sunroom Foundations • Site Soil Conditions / Testing • Slab on grade design – existing / new • Footing design • TEK 2: Deck Design with Sunrooms • PT lumber issues • Joist ./ Ledger / Carrier Beams / Posts / Bracing / Connections • Designing Footings for applied sunroom loads NSA Engineering Services Report

  13. Sunroom Environmental Load Examples • Develop example calculations for NSA member company engineers, third party engineers and contractors to show them the correct way to determine the ASCE 7 snow, wind, seismic and other loads on sunroom structures. NSA Engineering Services Report

  14. Sunroom Industry Roof Evaluation Report • Develop an industry wide code compliance report that encompasses all NSA member roof panel designs. • Develop the Standard Evaluation Plan for Sunroom Insulated Sandwich Panels (SISP) • Develop the Sunroom Insulated Sandwich Panel Qualification and Quality Assessment Procedures • Qualification of a “SISP” • Component Materials • Assembly Qualification • Ongoing Quality Procedures • Quality Manual • Initial Plant Inspection and Audit • CARs • Ongoing Auditing and Testing • Annual Review of Certification Reports • Adding Alternate Manufacturers • Adding Alternate Materials • Submission of Outside Test Data • Certification Body Fees • Listing Fees • Testing Fees • Use of Listing Mark NSA Engineering Services Report

  15. Existing House Evaluation Method • Develop a guideline for evaluating the capacity of an existing structure (house) to support the applied loads from a new sunroom addition. NSA Engineering Services Report

  16. Lateral Load Resistance Test Method • Develop a test method for evaluating the lateral load carrying capacity of a sunroom addition. NSA Engineering Services Report

  17. Energy Modeling of Sunroom & House • Develop a whole building energy model in either E-Quest (DOE-2) or ENERGY PLUS for use by the industry in determining the impact of various sunroom categories on several different home designs.
