  4. New Business • Cattle replaced buffalo for meat source • Ranchers learned to use Longhorns for profit • Used cowboys to do the work- Branding, herding, roping etc • Today’s cowboys stem from Mexican ranchers

  5. Spanish to English • Vaquero- Cowboy • Chaperros- Chaps • Charqui- Jerky • Mesteno- Mustang • Bronco Caballo- Broncos • Ranchero- Ranch • Corral and Rodeo are both Spanish words

  6. A Day in the Life • Work- 10-14 hours a day minimum • Any age after they became a teen • Constantly on horseback but didn’t own the horse • Carried guns for protection • Round up cattle and sort by branding • Drive the cattle to shipping centers
