History Of VoIP Internet phones were first introduced by VocalTec (company) in 1995 with the aim to save money in long-distance communication. In 1998, Vocal Technologies succeeded in adding voicemail to their phones and integrated their phone's software with Microsoft's application NetMeeting. Thereafter in 1998, VocalTec brought in phone to phone and computer to phone calling features in voice over internet protocol. But that time, only 1 percent of telecommunications users had shifted to VoIP because they had to listen to ads in -between the calls. In 1999, several other companies such as Smooth stone IP Communications entered VoIP systems with strong features and capabilities. By the 21st century, more and more people started adopting VoIP services. In 2003, more than 25% of calls were made over the Internet. The introduction of high speed 4G internet connection has furthermore boosted the use of VoIP call service. Nowadays, VoIP has become a buzzword in commercial businesses, and approximately 40% of businesses use these services for their day to day communication. Working Principle Of VoIP The working principle of VoIP is very simple, it takes an analog voice signal as input and converts it into digital packets. These packets are then transmitted over a network called IP telephony. At the receiver end, these packets are again converted into the analog signal. Each packet contains 20 to 30 milliseconds of audio. VoIP systems use sophisticated codec (coder and decoder) to convert the analog signal into a digital and vice versa. VoIP calls are similar to regular phone calls, with the only difference being that they are made over the internet in lieu of PSTN (public switched telephone networks). VoIP Phones VoIP phones are also known as IP phones. It is a device, which is used to connect users to VoIP systems via Ethernet. Sometimes a VoIP service provider offers it, and other times you need to purchase it on your own. Following are the different types of VoIP phones available in the market.
