The training was one day a week and carefully planned to take account of the experience I gained in the salon. I have now completed an Apprenticeship which included an NVQ 2 in hairdressing and am working towards an Advanced Apprenticeship, to get an NVQ 3 in hairdressing plus some other units in customer service. Ben Student Vocational route Click the future that interests you After getting 5 GCSEs at Grade D, I contacted a training provider who found me a suitable job and started me on an Apprenticeship. I enjoyed working and completed his Apprenticeship ahead of schedule and moved straight on to an Advanced Apprenticeship. Now I am coming to the end of that I have decided to progress onto a part time Foundation Degree at a local college. When I finish the Foundation Degree I will have the option of doing a third year. Alex Nursery care Click the future that interests you I decided to take an intermediate course in health and social care in the sixth form having achieved GCSEs Grade D and E I gained a distinction, which is the equivalent of five GCSEs at grade A! I then decided to take an NVQ level 2 in early years care and education, spending three days each week working at a nursery. Two days were spent in in college, doing Key Skills and the underpinning knowledge for the NVQ. I enjoyed it so much that the NVQ was completed in a year. This impressed the placement supervisor so much that when there was a vacancy for an apprentice, I was offered the job. With full employer support the NVQ level 3 qualification was soon achieved. I made sure that my out of school activities were dominated by dance and drama whilst enjoying my A level studies in English, theatre studies and sociology. I decided that the next step would be to take a degree in dance and drama. At university, I was able to dabble in stage life and take part in a number of small time West End chorus lines. I thought my future lay either on the stage or at least working in the education department of a stage company. On graduating I chose to keep my options open and study for a Post Graduate Certificate in Education.   13. Laura Jewellery designer Click the future that interests you I successfully gained a place on the National Diploma in design crafts at the local art college after achieving 4 A-C GCSE grades. During the course, I developed an interest and skills in jewellery and metals. I successfully completing the National Diploma and was accepted on to the Higher National Diploma in design metals. I continued education with a further year at the Kent Institute of Art and Design where I got a first class honours degree in silversmithing, goldsmithing and jewellery design. After spending some time teaching metals at several colleges, as well as working on her own commissions, I am now concentrating on my own work. Shortly after setting up my own jewellery company I was selected to exhibit my work at London Fashion Week!! After successfully completing the course I was employed by a local care home who were keen to support further study through work based learning. One day a week I went to a training provider in order to complete an Apprenticeship in adult care. Having achieved the qualification I was able to get a new job, working with children at a hospital as a care assistant, whilst also working towards an Advanced Apprenticeship. At the time I decided not to go on to higher education. I then succeeded in obtaining a work placement in an engineering department and started an Advanced Apprenticeship programme which included a National Vocational Qualification at levels 2 and 3 in engineering production and also a National Diploma in electronic engineering. . Louise Academic route Click the future that interests you Although I always enjoyed school and the challenge of learning new things, I became unsure of what I wanted to do for A levels and even more uncertain of an eventual career! I visited the local university and began to realise that gaining a degree in a subject could lead to a variety of jobs in other areas. I did well in my GCSEs getting all A-C grades. Having now completed my AS exams I have been accepted by a university to study English. Although still unsure of what I finally want to do, I have developed an understanding of the many opportunities that will be available on completion of my degree. Shane ICT Click the future that interests you Having completed two placements working with computers, and achieved C and D grades at GCSE as well as an intermediate course in ICT I decided to complete a course in computer build and repair. I spend two days a week with a training provider and the remaining three days completing an advanced course in ICT working with the school computer technicians, practising the skills learned with my training provider. Having completed the course and achieved the NVQ, I have decided to work towards becoming a network manager and I am currently applying for an Advanced Apprenticeship. After some thought and discussion I chose the painting and decorating option at college and during the year achieved an NVQ level 1 in decorative occupations with a local training provider. On leaving school I was successful in securing an Apprenticeship with a local painting and decorating company, which included one day a week training. I have now completed an NVQ level 2 and nearly completed NVQ level 3 in painting and decorating. This improvement in my skills and qualifications has led to a three hundred per cent increase in salary!
