  1. What is The Right Type of Roofing for My Home? Replacing your roofing is a large investment, one that will last for many years, and one that you want to make sure you get right. With several options to choose from, ranging from reasonably priced asphalt roofing to luxury slate tiles, there isn’t one right choice for every person, budget, or home; rather, the right choice will be a combination of preference, affordability, and style. Asphalt Roofing Asphalt roofing is the most commonly used roofing material for residential homes, thanks to its relatively low cost, durability, and simple installation. There are many types of asphalt roofing products available, at varying levels of quality, and prices can range from $3-$7/sqft. Asphalt roofing comes in a wide variety of colour and style options, making it customizable to suit most design tastes. Asphalt roofing has a potential lifespan of around 25 years, making it a cost effective and reasonably long-lasting roofing option. Metal Roofing Metal roofing is a highly durable roofing product that is also resistant to extreme weather conditions. Options for metal roofing include steel, aluminum, zinc, and copper, and prices can range from $8/sqft for aluminum up to $30+ a square foot for copper. The benefit of installing a metal roof over other types of materials is the longevity – properly maintained, a metal roof can last 50+ years. The downside is the initial cost not only for materials, but also for installation. Wood Shingles Wood singles are a great, natural looking roofing material that can suit many types of west coast homes. They typically come in 3 types of wood – cedar, pine and redwood – and are machine cut for uniformity. The cost and life span are similar to those of asphalt roofing; however make sure that the shingles meet required fire codes. Clay Tiles Clay tiles are a distinctive roofing material that has been used for thousands of years. They are extremely durable and long lasting, however they are also very heavy and expensive to both buy and install. Most clay tiles roofs will require additional structural support to carry the weight, however a clay roof can be expected to last upwards of 50 years. Slate Slate roofing tiles are durable, visually appealing, sustainable, and recyclable. Many colour options are available to suite different tastes and they work with many home styles. However like clay tiles, slate roofing is expensive and will usually require additional structural support, adding to the cost of installation. A benefit that comes with an investment in a slate roof however, is a life expectancy that may outlive the house – a slate roof can last up to 100 years.
