  1. Le 27:30 'And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD'S. It is holy to the LORD. Pt.1 Vss. Used to Teach Tithing Before the Law Ge14:18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. 19 And he blessed him and said: "Blessed be Abram of the most High God, possessor of heaven and earth; 20and blessed be the most High God, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand." And he gave him a tithe of all. Only record of Abraham giving a tithe.

  2. Vss. Used to Teach N.T. Tithing 1Co 16:1 ¶ Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: 2 On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come.

  3. What do the Scriptures teach?

  4. The Pastor’s Old Covenant Hammer 10Bringall the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try Me now in this," Says the LORD of hosts, "If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it. Mal 3:7 ¶ Yet from the days of your fathers You have gone away from My ordinances And have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you," Says the LORD of hosts. "But you said, 'In what way shall we return?' 8 "Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, 'In what way have we robbed You?' In tithes and offerings. 9 You are cursed with a curse, for you have robbed Me, this whole nation.

  5. Another scripture used to teach tithing before the Mosaic Law. Jacob bargains with God! Ge28:20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and clothing to put on, 21 "so that I come back to my father's house in peace, then the LORD shall be my God. 22… and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.“ Only record of Jacob giving a tithe. The Purpose of Tithes Nu 18:26 "Speak thus to the Levites, and say to them: 'When you take from the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them as your inheritance… De 26:12 ¶ "When you have finished laying aside all the tithe of your increase in the third year-the year of tithing-and have given it to the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, so that they may eat within your gates and be filled,

  6. Josephus, 1st century Jewish Historian- says that one tenth was to be given to the priests and Levites, one tenth was to be applied to feasts in the metropolis, and that a tenth besides these was every third year to be given to the poor. • Smith’s Bible Dictionary- Fromall this we gather, 1. That one tenth of the whole produce of the soil was to be assigned for the maintenance of the Levites. 2. That out of this the Levites were to dedicate a tenth to God, for the use of the high priest. 3. That a tithe, in all probability a second tithe, was to be applied to festival purposes. 4. That in every third year, either this festival tithe or a third tenth was to be eaten in company with the poor and the Levites. • 2-21/3Tithes Every Year • If tithing is for the Church, why only 10%?

  7. We are under the New Covenant Anything not clearly carried over into the New Covenant is not for the Church! Heb 8:6 ¶ But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises. 7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. 8 Because finding fault with them, He says: "Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah- Jer 31:31-34

  8. Does the New Covenant Teach Tithing? Did Jesus Teach Tithing for the Church? Mt 23:23 "Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. Lu 11:42 Lu 18:11 "The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank You that I am not like other men, extortionists, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 'I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.' No

  9. Did Peter, John, James, or Paul, Teach Tithing for the Church? • No Mention at All • Pauldid teach a lot on giving, yet never mentioned any amount or percentage, though he had plenty of opportunity. Both Sacred & Secular History Agree McClintoch & Strong Ency. & Encyclopedia Americana -In the early Christian Church the custom of consecrating to religious purposes a tenth of the income was voluntary, and it was not made obligatory until the Council of Tours in 567. The 2nd Council of Macon 585, enjoined the payment of tithes under pain of excommunication;

  10. Pt 2 Honoring God with our Giving Ph 4:15 Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only. 16 For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for my necessities. 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account. 18 Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God.

  11. Proper Giving comes out of an Intimate Relationship with God. 2Co 8:1 ¶ Moreover, brethren, we make known to you the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia: 2 that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality. 3 For I bear witness that according to their ability, yes, and beyond their ability, they were freely willing, 4 imploring us with much urgency that we would receive the gift and the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. 5 And not only as we had hoped, but they first gave themselves to the Lord, and then to us by the will of God.

  12. At the Center of all Our Giving • should be Three Thoughts • 1. By faith we believe God is our provider. • Ge 22:8 "My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering." • 2. The acknowledgement that God is the creator, the owner, and the giver of all things, and what we give back to God is only a part of what He has given to us in the first place. • Ps 50:10 For every beast of the forest is Mine, And the cattle on a thousand hills. 11 I know all the birds of the mountains, And the wild beasts of the field are Mine. • 3. We have been entrusted, by God, to be stewards over His property. • Mt 25:23 “Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.‘

  13. Two General Purposes for Giving 1. To Help Those in Need Ro 15:26 For it pleased those from Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor among the saints who are in Jerusalem. 2. To Advance the Kingdom of God by Supporting Missions, Pastors, Church Ministries Ph 4:15 Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel… no church shared with me concerning giving…but you only. 16 For even in Thessalonica you sent aid…again for my necessities. 1Co 9:11 If we have sown spiritual things for you, is it a great thing if we reap your material things? 14 Even so the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel

  14. How Should We Give • 1. Cheerfully • 2Co 9:7 Every man according as he purposes in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loves a cheerful giver. • 2. Sacrificially • 2Co 8:2 that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality. • 3. Voluntarily • 2Co 8:3 For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves; • 4. Humbly • Mt 6:3 "But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 "that your charitable deed may be in secret;

  15. 5. According to Ability • Ac 11:29 Then the disciples, each according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brethren dwelling in Judea. • Examples of Giving • Lu 21:1 ¶ Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, 2 and He saw a certain poor widow putting in two mites. 3 So He said, "Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; 4 "for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all her livelihood.” • 2Co 8:3 For I bear witness that according to their ability, yes, and beyond their ability, they were freely willing, 4 imploring us with much urgency that we would receive the gift and the fellowship of the ministering to the saints..

  16. Conclusion • Tithing is Not a N.T. doctrine. • But the N.T. is a far superior covenant with Greater Light, Greater Blessings, and a Higher Standard for God’s Children i.e. Voluntary, Sacrificial, & Cheerful Giving. • Ibelieve the principal of tithing is a good place to start trusting God with our finances.
