  3. The Empire Strikes Back • Austria-Hungary is Outraged • Germany promises unconditional support • Serbia must allow Austria-Hungary to investigate and punish anyone involved • Serbia does not agree to the demands • Austria declares war on Serbia July 28, 1914

  4. Alliances Kick In • Serbia allied to Russia • Russia declares war on Austria • Austria allied to Germany • Germany declares war on Russia • Russia turns to France • France declares war on Germany & Austria • Germany attacks France • France turns to Britain • Britain declares war on Germany/Austria World War 1 Has Begun!

  5. CENTRAL POWERS VS. ALLIES • Central PowersAllies • Germany Great Britain • Austria-Hungary France • Bulgaria Russia • Ottoman Empire Japan • Italy

  6. SCHLIEFFEN PLAN • Germany’s plan on how to fight on 2 fronts • Attack France first • Once France is defeated, turn and fight Russia • Germany invades Belgium • August 3, 1914 • Uses Belgium as a back door to France

  7. The Western Front • Fighting along the French-German border • Stretches nearly 500 miles • Both sides dig trenches for protection • Conflict will turn into a stalemate • Battle lines remain almost unchanged for 4 yrs

  8. The Eastern Front • Fighting along the German-Russian border • No Trench Warfare here • More movement on the Eastern Front • More casualties on the Eastern Front • Russia will have the largest amount of casualties
