  1. Simplified method for the calculation of the seasonal performance factor of heat pumps VDI 4650 Marek Miara Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare Energiesysteme ISE Annex 39 Workshop 12.11.2013, Tokyo

  2. Coefficients of efficiency JAZ COP η, (eta) SCOP EER JAZ SEER SPF SPF APF HSPF CSPF Different questions – proper coefficients

  3. VDI Verein Deutscher Ingenieure • Organisationwith more than 150 years history • Promotion and representation of engineers • Publisher of VDI guidelines „VDI Richtlinien” • More than 2000 active guidelines

  4. VDI 4650 Part 1 • Simplified method for the calculation of the seasonal performance factor of heat pumps SCOP • Input for the calculation: COP values and correction factors

  5. Calculation method of SCOPGround source heat pumps COP B0/W35 COP B0/W35 3 correction factors (operation conditions) 3 correction factors (operation conditions) factorα (coverageof HP in mono-energeticoperation) SCOPH SCOPW % % SCOP seasonal (annual) coefficient of performance

  6. Correction factors......decide about accurateness of the results

  7. Criticism / weaknesses of VDI 4650 • Main points: • Unclear source for the correction factors • Lack of calculation method for inverter heat pumps • Inflated results for calculation of high temperature heat pumps • Inflated results for calculation of domestic hot water

  8. Amendment 2014 • Main points: • Well documented method of determination of correction factors • Inclusion of calculation method for inverter heat pumps • Correction of the factors for calculation of high temperature heat pumps • Correction of the factors for calculation of domestic hot water

  9. Example New factors for DHW • Comparison between VDI 4650 and DIN EN 16147: • Heat pump, thermal power 6 kW by B0 / W35 and COP_N von 4,9 • Buffer storage (DHW Storage), volume of 175 litres and power demand of heat pump in standby modus 35 W • “Zapfprofil” XL: • 2,85 efficiency according to DIN EN 16147 • 3,26 efficiency according to DIN EN 16147 corrected with standby – loses • 3,60 efficiency according to “new” VDI factors • 4,39 efficiency according to VDI 4650 Part 1: 2009

  10. ComparisonVDI 4650 vs. „WP Effizienz” Project (Monitoring) measurement VDI 4650 difference air to water heat pumps brine to water heat pumps water to water heat pumps

  11. Comparison between different methods VDI 4650 vs. other methods SCOP/SPF A/W heat pump with 8,3 kW capacity at A2/W35 and Tb=-8°C, Source: Annex 39 Workshop

  12. Whatis not VDI 4650Summary • “Ultra”-accurate simulation program taking into account all possible margin conditions • “crystal ball” good enough for foresightingchanged operation conditions and “non-standard” users behaviours • The only and the best available tool

  13. What is VDI 4650Summary • “possible easy and sufficiently accurate” tool for calculating of SCOP values (aimed accuracy not less than 10%) • Chosen tool for the HP incentive program in Germany (BAFA) • Good basis for calculating ecological and financial benefits resulting from using of heat pumps
