  1. Trebuchet project • DRIVING QUESTION: How can quadratic functions be used to model real-life launching patterns? • Your group will create a functional counterweight trebuchet that will launch golf balls across the field! Using your ingenuity and your mathematical prowess, you will find a way to launch your golf ball as high and as far as possible. You will then map the path your golf ball travels and write a quadratic equation that models its journey. • TASK DESCRIPTIONS: • There are 3 major parts to this project: your trebuchet, your mathematical calculations, and your exhibition display. • TASK #1: Trebuchet • Your group must create a working trebuchet that consistently launches a golf ball at least 5 feet high and 10 feet far. • Directions for the frame will be provided, but the arm and pouch design is up to you! • Beautification and aesthetics should be considered after the trebuchet is considered functional • TASK #2: Mathematical Calculations • Once you have completed Task #1, you may move on to the nitty-gritty math of the project. Each person will be responsible for working out a sample launch problem that is similar to what you will observe with your trebuchet. This sample problem will be worth 10 points, so be sure that each person is able to solve and explain the process for writing quadratic equations in both vertex and standard form, as well as solving quadratic equations using the quadratic formula. • In addition to the individual problem that each member in your group will be responsible for, your team must use the data you gather from your actual launch to derive the equation that best represents the path your golf ball travels once it is launched. You will write the equation in vertex form, convert it into standard form, and solve it using the quadratic formula to check your solutions/roots. • TASK #3: Exhibition Display • Your trebuchet and your mathematical calculations will be on display at Exhibition. How you decide to display your work is up to you, but you must include: • An artistic rendition of the projectile • All the sample problems your group submitted (including neatly written work for each) • The calculations that represent your group’s actual data • Your trebuchet, decorated and beautified • A video with points plotted (accessible via iPad) • Use a standing poster board, hang information from the ceiling, post your work on the walls, GET CREATIVE! Just be sure to check with Miss Quan about where your group will be setting up so you can make sure everything fits/works in your designated space!  • ESK 5: I can solve quadratic functions and understand their graphs • Solve quadratic equations in one variable • Apply quadratic equations to physical problems • Use vertex form for quadratics to model the path of an object You will be presenting your findings for Exhibition, so be sure you are ready to describe your work!
