Subtracting Rational Expressions

This guide provides a clear, step-by-step approach to subtracting rational expressions. Begin by finding the least common denominator (LCD) for the expressions involved. If the rational expressions already share a common denominator, proceed to directly subtract the numerators. For those that do not, multiply the numerator by the same factor used for the denominator to make it common. After obtaining a common base, subtract the numerators and simplify the result for a clearer answer.

  1. Subtracting Rational Expressions

  2. Step 1 Common Denominator • You need to find the least common denominator. (If the rational expressions already have a common denominator then subtract the numerators across the top.) The common denominator is x(x-6)(x+6)

  3. Step 2 Top and bottom • You need to multiply the numerator by the same number you multiplied the denominator with.

  4. Step 3 Subtract Numerators

  5. Step 4 simplify
