METS, MBRS and Audiovisual Preservation MAVIS Users Conference November 6, 2003 Dick Thaxter, Library of Congress
Digital A/V Preservation Project • Carl Fleischhauer on loan to MBRS from 1999-2003 • Focus on digital preservation process, formats, and most importantly, metadata • In search of a schema – Making of America II becomes METS • METS development adopted by LC • METS “coming out” party last week
Reference Model for an Open Archival Information System (OAIS) PRESERVATION PLANNING P R O D U C E R S C O N S U M E R S DATA MANAGEMENT INGEST ACCESS ARCHIVAL STORAGE ADMINISTRATION SIPs (Submission Information Packages) will be produced by the AV preservation activity, ready to submit to LC’s future digital repository.
METS uses • The OAIS Model • Archival IP - long term preservation • Submission IP- what we’ve been trying to model • Dissemination IP- sent to end users
Builder data entry Blue terms are used to select separate data entry screens entry screen Example of data
OUTCOME ONE: VIRTUAL DIGITAL OBJECT The fileGrp segment of a METS instance “binds” the object Includes logical pathnames for files, future switch to persistent names possible.
OUTCOME 2: PRESENTATION OF OBJECT Presentation in Browser
METS distributed data model • Success with simple objects compiled from several sources • MAVIS will supply source metadata and possibly more • Use of METS profiles – a templating feature of METS • NBC Radio, 78’s projects during 2004
What’s Next? • Direct support of METS in MAVIS? • How to represent the n-tiered METS structmap? • What metadata do we really want to keep? • How are digital objects and their metadata stored for access and for long-term preservation
