  2. Goals Understand the definition of alcohol. Identify two Georgia laws that pertain to alcohol use. Understand the lawful punishments for these laws. Identify some reasons people drink alcohol. Identify the legal age to buy, have, or drink alcohol. Identify three types of alcohol. Understand some health problems associated with drinking alcohol.

  3. What is alcohol? • An intoxicating beverage made from fermented agricultural crops. • A depressant

  4. Georgia Law • 40-6-391 (O.C.G.A.) Driving under the influence of alcohol • A person shall not drive or be in actual physical control of any moving vehicle while under the influence of alcohol to the extent that it is less safe for that person to drive.

  5. What could happen? • Up to $1000.00 fine • Up to 12 months in jail • Community service • D.U.I. & alcohol risk reduction course • Probation

  6. Georgia Law • 3-3-23 (O.C.G.A.) Possession of alcohol by a person under 21 years of age. • No person under 21 years of age shall purchase, attempt to purchase, or knowingly possess any alcoholic beverage.

  7. What could happen? • Lose drivers license • Up to a $300.00 fine • Up to 6 months in jail • Probation

  8. Why do people drink? • Peer Pressure • Self-Confidence • “Forget” about their problems • They don’t think that anything is wrong with it.

  13. What does alcohol do to a person? • Causes a person to become intoxicated. • Lose coordination. • Loss of motor skills. • Make bad decisions. • Causes… DEATH!!!

  14. Health Problems • Heart damage and failure • Impairs brain development and causes brain shrinkage. • Cancer • 3.6% of all cancers are alcohol related. (www.wikipedia.org)

  15. Health Problems continued • Liver Disease (Cirrhosis) • Approx. 2 million people in the United States have alcohol related liver diseases. (www.wikipedia.org)

Health Problems continued • Stomach/Intestinal Ulcers • A stomach ulcer is a sore/raw area on the wall of the stomach or small intestines. • About 20 million Americans develop at least one stomach ulcer during their lifetime. (www.wikipedia.org) • Approx. 6,000 Americans die of stomach ulcer related complications every year. (www.mamashealth.com)

  19. Real Life • On Sunday morning, September 18, 1999, Jacqueline Saburido and her friends were on their way home from a birthday party. At the same time 18 year old Reggie Stephey was on his way home from a night of drinking. Reggie lost control of his vehicle and ran into the vehicle carrying Jacqui and her friends. Two of Jacqui’s friends were killed in the accident. Jacqui was trapped in the car when it caught on fire. Jacqui was burned over 60% of her body. Jacqui lost her fingers, hair, ears, nose and left eyelid along with much of her vision. She has had more than 50 operations with many still to come. • In June of 2001, Reggie Stephey was convicted of two counts of intoxication manslaughter for the death of Jacqui’s two friends. He was sentenced to seven years in prison and fined $20,000.

  22. Chris Sandy • On April 11, 2001 Chris Sandy was at a party with friends. • He had four mixed drinks. • Chris and his friend Jessie left the party to go to another friends house. • He was travelling 77mph on a country road outside Atlanta. • The speed limit was 45mph.

  23. Chris Sandy • Chris was involved in an accident that night where two innocent people were killed. • Chris was convicted of two counts of Vehicular Homicide by D.U.I. • He was sentenced to serve 13 years in prison and 17 years on probation.
