Plot • fed up go to Smaug chamber • Bilbo determines dragon gone • everyone take valuables • Bilbo takes Arkenstone very valuable gem • Bilbo also takes coat mail more value gold • after excitement company want leave • Thorin lead company out passage • company leave through front door • at river running • Company very tired, rested, ate • wondered where dragon gone • Smaug finds out dwarves associated lake town men • flies seek vengeance • Hobbit, dwarves in dark passage long time

  3. Character Revelation Bilbo is starting to be greedy around his friends This could be seen when he and his friends arrived at Smaug’s chamber and he finds the arkenstone and keeps it a secret and tells no one.

  4. Literary Devices Metaphor- “whiles there’s life there’s hope” Foreshadowing- “All the same he had an uncomfortable feeling the picking and choosing had not really been meant to include this marvelous gem, and that trouble would yet come of it” author giving clues consequences come

  5. Questions How did the company get trapped in tunnel and what was their solution to get out? Explain why did Bilbo not tell the others about the arkenstone? Why was there no sign of Smaug when Bilbo and the dwarves were in the tunnel?
