How It Works… • List up to 12 schools in order of preference • Students are matched to their highest choice possible, subject to priorities & seat availability • School programs use different admissions methods to determine how candidates are considered • Every 8th grade NYC resident is guaranteed entrance into a public high school in New York City

  4. What should factor in to your decision? • Where is the school located? • Bronx? Manhattan? Queens? Brooklyn? • What is the travel time? • 10 minutes? 30 minutes? 1 hour? • What is the school day? • 7:15-2:30? 8:00-3:15? • How many students attend the school? • 200? 500? 1000?

  5. What should factorin to your decision? • What academic programs are offered? • Art? Music? Drama? Electives? • Does the school have a specific academic focus? • Specialize in science? Specialize in the arts? • What extracurricular activities, clubs, and sports are offered? • Sport teams? Clubs?

Admission Priorities • Usually students living in the same borough as the school they apply to will have admission priority. • Attending Opening Houses or Information Sessions will give you priority! See upcoming dates in the High school Directory. • Standardized tests and 7th grade report card grades

  7. Types of High Schools • Audition Scholars must audition for placement in school • Specialized High Schools 8 Specialized High Schools in NYC. Scholars MUST sign up and take the SHSAT to get into a Specialized High School • Limited Unscreened Priority to students who attend information sessions and/or open houses • Screened • Decision is based on final 7th grade report card grades and reading and math standardized tests. • Attendance is also considered. • Unscreened • Students are selected randomly. • Zoned • Programs that are given priority to students who live in the area.

Career & Technical Education • Academic work integrated with workforce skills in specific career pathways. • CTE Programs are designed so you leave with a credential or certificate. • Students learn “hands on” career skills while preparing for college or after high school options. • www.nyc.gov/schools/ChoicesEnrollment/High/Choices

Private Schools • Students must take the TACHS exam to be eligible for placement in a private school • TACHS exam focuses on Reading, Math and Language • Exam is $52 • You may sign up for TACHS exam via internet or phone (deadlines vary) • TACHS exam is November 4th, 2011 • Please see Mrs. Winter for more information and dates if interested! • www.tachsinfo.com

  11. Charter Schools • Students get selected by lottery • Lottery usually takes place in April www.nycharterschools.org See Mrs. Winter for a list of NYC Charter Schools

  12. Boarding Schools • Boarding Schools look for students who are involved both in their school and in their community.   13. How to File an Application • 1. Scholars will receive their HS Application for admission to HS on October 11th. • 2. Discuss with your child the programs to which she or he will be applying. • 3. Rank in order of preference up to 12 choices. • 4. Return the application to Mrs. Winter by December 2nd. * During this time, Mrs. Winter will meet and counsel with every 8th grade scholar regarding their HS choices and options.

  14. Admission Tips! • Start Early • Attend Fairs and Open Houses • Understand the Different Kinds of Admissions Methods • Location, Location, Location • Plan Ahead • Consider admissions priorities and methods when considering program choices. • Ask Questions!
