CourseOverview • Electrical Trades is a three-year sequence of classroom and laboratory instruction designed to provide job-specific training for entry-level employment in residential and commercial/industrial electrical careers. • Instruction includes installation and servicing, therefore requiring a moderate amount of technical reading and a high level of math skill.

  3. SkillsU.S.A. • Each student is expected to become a member of Skills U.S.A. – a student leadership organization that encourages students to challenge themselves in competition. • The students will compete in various skills areas at the district and then state level of competition. • They will also be encouraged to design and construct an electrical exhibit for judging at these competitions. • We are proud of our students who have advanced to the national level in Skills U.S.A. six of the past eight years.

  4. Skills USA National Competition Our electrical trades program has advanced to the national level of competition six of the last eight years.

  5. Skills USA Team Works Four students compete together in the electrical, construction, plumbing, and masonry fields.

  6. Skills USA State Competitors These Leander students represented our district at the state skills contest.

  7. Electrical Displays • Electrical exhibits are designed and constructed by students. • By advancing to the state level students • become eligible to purchase letter jackets.

  8. Wiring Skills Students learn a variety of wiring skills for commercial and residential installations.

  9. Intro. to Electrical Trades • 9th-12th, 1 credit • Electrical 1 • 10th-12th, 1 credit • Electrical 2 • 11th-12th, 2 credits Prerequisites

  10. Career Passport Students completing this program will receive the Construction Electricity Career Passport. This Career Passport will enable the student to provide valuable documentation of the training and skills they have acquired while participating in the Electrical Trades Program. Continuing Education Upon graduationstudents will continue their education by participating in an Electrical Apprenticeship Training School. The programs are offered by the Independent Electrical Contractors Association & International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. The employers who hire our students require their employees to complete this 4-year apprenticeship program and will reimburse the students for tuition and fees. This program meets one per week (4hrs.). Students entering college may apply the skills they have acquired in this program toward degrees such as Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. In addition, they could work in this field for financial support of their post-secondary goals. “Real WorldExperience”

Employment Some of the contractors & organizations that support our program include: I.E.C., I.B.E.W., Randall Electrical, Bowne Electric, Beckett Electric, Design Electric, Walker Electric, Elliot Electric, etc. These companies not only contribute financially to our high school program, they also employ many of our students each year. The average salary of students entering the electrical field is between $10.00 and $12.50 per hour. With the valuable training offered in this Electrical Trades Program, we typically help secure employment for 30 to 40 students in the electrical field each year. Notes After the successful completion of this program students seeking jobs in the electrical field will be employed. Many contractors come to Leander High School in May to interview & hire students. Mr. Williams is the instructor. He has been an electrician since 1991. Before working at LHS, he was employed as a project manager and estimator for a private electrical contractor. He also teaches at Central Texas Independent Electrical Contractors Apprenticeship Training School, where he has been on staff for more than five years. “Real WorldExperience” (cont.)
