Directions to The Old Chapel, Denford

From Heathrow, (98 miles/~2 hours) follow signs to M25 motorway North

Take the M25 25+ miles to the A1(M) North (not the M1)

Stay on A1(M) for 40+ miles until Huntingdon A-14 West (toward Kettering)

From Huntingdon/Alconbury/Molesworth

Get on A14 West toward Kettering, go past Molesworth and Keyston exits

This is a shortcut route and easy to miss

2.5 miles past Keyston, take “Farm and Plant Depot” exit (noted on bottom of sign)

Take short, striped entrance ramp at the small blue dead end sign

If you pass the A45 exit just 300 yards beyond, you’ve gone too far

Follow the country lane 0.8 miles, then take the only right

Descend into valley 1 mile, then merge with traffic along River Nene in Denford

Take 2nd left onto Pegs Lane (if you pass Denford Garage you’ve gone too far)

The Old Chapel is straight ahead at the hilltop

Attractions Near Denford

Nene Way (1 minute) Walking trail passes Denford, right down across the Four Bridges and by the ducks, following the River Nene.

Rushton Triangular Lodge (19 minutes) Elizabethan folly, everything built in threes. English Heritage (English Heritage [EH]), M, Th-Su 10-5

Kirby Hall (26 minutes): Great Elizabethan mansion, part restored/part ruin w/elaborate gardens. EH, 10-5 M, Th-Su.

Sywell Country Park (26 minutes) Edwardian reservoir/arboretum, 2 mile lake walk, 3 birding hides. Open 9-5, free, but £2 parking.

Grafham Water (29 minutes) Lake/nature reserve w/cycling, walking, canoeing, windsurfing, sailing, etc.

Peterborough Cathedral (29 minutes) Norman-style cathedral downtown right outside shopping mall. £3.50, open M-F 9-6:30, S-Su 9-5.

Rockingham Castle (30 minutes) Smaller Norman castle, still privately-owned, only open June-Sept 12-5pm, £7.50.

Kelmarsh Hall (33 minutes) 18th century Palladian-style mansion with gardens. Locale for EH annual Festival of History, UK’s biggest reenactment (Romans to WWII), in August. Privately-owned, only open Easter-Sep Sundays/Bank Holidays and Thursdays, 2-5:30.

Duxford Imperial War Museum (42 minutes) Europe’s premier aviation museum, many planes, tanks, and US Air Force hall. Open 10-6.

Cambridge (45 minutes) Many attractions and old colleges in university city; punting the Cam, Kings College Chapel, Round Church, Botanic Gardens, Madingley US Cemetery as well as various theaters.

Kirby Muxloe Castle (46 minutes) Moated uncompleted castle ruin—only worth seeing on way to Ashby, EH only Jul-Aug S-Su 10-5.

Wimpole House (47 minutes) Manor house and 18th century working model farm, also formal gardens. National Trust, 1-5 all but Th-F.

Bletchley Park (55 minutes) Manor house w/WWII Enigma codebreaking museums, mockups, etc. Open 10:30-5.

Warwick Castle (57 minutes) Among UK’s most imposing castles, w/archery, jousting, trebuchet, falconry, open 10-5.

Ashby de la Zouch Castle (59 minutes) Tournament locale in Scott’s Ivanhoe, now a ruin, but includes 78 foot intact Hastings Tower which can be climbed, also underground passage to tower. EH, open 10-5 M, Th-Su, av visit 1 hour.

Ely Cathedral (59 minutes) Among most beautiful UK cathedrals, central Octagon tower, 7:30-6pm (5pm Sundays), 7pm summer.

Althorp (60 minutes) Manor of Spencers for 500 years, including gardens, Diana memorial/grave, July-August only, 11-5.


Good Food Near Denford

The Cock Inn at Denford (1 minute walk): 16th cent. coaching inn, now country pub/restaurant. Traditional English fare and relatively cheap.

Bonophool Balti Hut (2 minutes): Good Indian restaurant and take-away in nearby market town of Thrapston, relatively cheap.

Golden Rings Chinese (2 minutes): The better of the two Chinese take-aways in Thrapston (surprising for such a small town).

Axe and Compass (3 minutes): Upmarket pub/restaurant in Ringstead, good value, especially 10-quid 3-course lunches Mon-Sat

The Pheasant, Keyston (6 minutes): Member of Huntsbridge group, top gourmet pub, thatched roof inn, British cuisine w/French emphasis.

The Racehorse, Catworth (6 minutes): Traditional country pub, good food, moderate prices.

F E Coales Butchers, Twywell (6 minutes): Butchers/country shop w/local foods—people drive for miles to this sleepy village for the place.

The Falcon, Fotheringhay (18 minutes): Another Huntsbridge gastropub w/Italian theme, village where Mary Queen of Scots was executed.

Browns of Stilton Fine Foods (26 minutes): East Anglian delicacies, inc/game, smoked eel, cheeses, etc.; country store dates to 1870.

The Bell Inn, Stilton (27 minutes): The Bell Inn, 17th century coach house, birthplace of Stilton cheese, moderate prices.

The Old Bridge, Huntingdon (29 minutes): Huntsbridge flagship gastropub, modern British cuisine, old ivy-covered hotel on Ouse River.
