  2. Project addresses 2 main agricultural production areas with emphasis on both: • livestock production( Health and production) • sustainable crop production

FAO - ERCU Strategic Focus Areas (SFA) • Humanitarian-Livelihood Assistance and Increased Food Security for Vulnerable Groups. • Increased Productivity And Commercialisation In The Small Holder Sector • Strengthened agricultural and early warning management information Deliberate shift from SFA 1 to SFA 2

  4. Composite project with the following sub- components: • Animal health • Livestock production • Crop production • Nutrition • Insurance schemes • HIV & AIDS • Marketing • Monitoring and Evaluation

  5. Livestock Overall funding principles are: • Humanitarian • Productivity • Profitability • Commercialisation • Market linkage development & • Long term sustainability

  6. Main areas of intervention • Animal Health • Small stock production models • Extension Support/ materials production • Capacity building (livestock / Vet extension staff and farmers) • Nutrition, HIV & AIDS and livelihoods as cross cutting issues

Animal Health General approach • Move towards self funding and sustainability • Based on market principles • Continued support to Newcastle disease vaccination • Active and Passive disease surveillance and awareness of HPAI • Continued Support to Dipping Services and Pilot small stock dip tanks

Small Stock Production Models General Approach: • Productivity & viability • Commercialisation • Market linkages & • Sustainability In partnership with NGOs, LPD &Vet services • Select 1 pilot district in each province • Develop small stock models (goats, poultry, rabbits, fish Apiculture etc) singly/integrated • Pilot models • Nutrition, HIV& AIDS awareness

Target Beneficiaries Potential to produce but affected by resource constraints • HH with capacity to keep and market livestock • HH with handicapped, chronically ill or disabled members; • HH with orphaned children; • Female headed households • HH affected by loss of harvest, livestock and other livelihood assets

Extension Support-Improve Technical Capacity (DLVS) In view of- new recruits who lack or have shortage of reference/extension materials • Support in-service training program • Support in-house production of extension material • Mobility (bicycles) • Support training in marketing • Support training of trainers • Mass production of extension materials (pamphlets , fliers, posters and manuals)

Overall Expected Results • Reduced livestock mortality • Effective community based ND vaccination program • Development of sustainable community based animal health systems • Viable Small stock production models for the different agro-ecological regions developed and implemented (1 district/province) • Improved technical capacity of livestock technical staff All these leading to :
