Verbs that end with –car, -gar, and –zar change spelling in the “yo” form in the preterite tense.

Therefore they are “irregular” because they don’t follow the

same conjugation formula as the other regular verbs

The verb endings for –ar verbs is

So let’s conjugate “tocar”

yo: tocé

problem: the sound of the conjugated verb is not consistent with the sound of the infinitive

The vowel “e” makes the “c” sound
